Do beauty supplement work?
I spoke to Sainsbury’s magazine beauty editor about beauty supplements and the feature is out now available at Sainsbury’s stores nationwide 🙌🏻 but I wanted to elaborate here because I do think the amount of misleading supplement endorsements I see online is slightly concerning! Supplements have a place for sure and can support our health but I worry that sometimes they’re taken for wrong reasons and without any research beforehand.
The bottom line is food should always come first and supplements, no matter how effective will never replace real food & a healthy lifestyle. That said, due to lower nutrient levels in the soil that our vegetables are grown in and intense farming techniques supplements (as well as stress levels, medication / antibiotic use & environmental pollutants we’re increasingly exposed to) supplements do have a place and can help bridge the gap when it comes to subtle nutrient imbalances that we might be missing out on from our diets. Remember to think of supplements as an insurance or a boost rather than a necessity unless tests prove otherwise.
It’s easy to get swept up in pretty packaging & marketing campaigns driven by celebrity endorsements that promise rapunzel hair and glowing 20 something skin but the truth is the essential nutrients we need to keep hair, skin and nails long thick plump and strong should above all come from the food we eat.
As every one is bio-individual its never a one size fits all approach when it comes to supplements and you can end up potentially causing more harm than good and also wasting a lot of £! so always speak to your health professional / GP before taking daily supplements to ensure you take the right ones suited to you and your health.
